Biden-Harris Administration Announces Nearly $10 Million in Grants from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to Improve Four Airports in Alaska

WASHINGTON – The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is awarding $9.9 million from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to four airports in Alaska. This announcement, which Secretary Buttigieg will make as part of the Administration’s Investing in America tour, delivers on President Biden’s commitment to rebuilding our nation’s infrastructure while lowering costs for families, creating good jobs, and advancing opportunity for all Americans. Last summer, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg was in Alaska to hear first-hand about the state’s unique aviation needs

The grants are part of nearly $1 billion in grants announced today for 114 airports across the country, spanning 44 states and three territories. The investment will help meet the growing demand for air travel and makes timely investments in key areas to ensure travelers have a safe, efficient and enjoyable experience.

“Under this administration, we are doing more to improve the travel experience than ever before, from expanding consumer protections to modernizing the physical infrastructure,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “These investments we’re announcing today, made possible by President Biden’s historic infrastructure package, will make it easier for passengers to get to and through airports, create jobs, and increase safety for all.”

In Alaska, the five projects selected include:

  • $3.4 million to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport for two projects: These projects will install a new passenger boarding bridge that will increase efficiency and lower electrical costs, and install 110 audio and visual monitors/stations in the terminal to meet and exceed ADA compliance.
  • Nearly $2.4 million to Fairbanks International Airport: This project will upgrade an aging passenger boarding bridge.
  • $2 million to Ketchikan International Airport: This project will expand the terminal for air taxi operations that will create a separate terminal for air taxi operations from the commercial operations and baggage claim entry and exits.
  • Nearly $2.2 million to Sitka Rocky Gutierrez Airport: This project will remodel 17,900 sq ft of the existing terminal and expand the terminal by 23,680 sq ft to add a passenger boarding bridge and expand the baggage claim area.

“Today’s funding not only helps modernize airports to meet the needs of travelers today and for years to come but also creates good-paying job opportunities in communities both large and small,” said FAA Associate Administrator for Airports, Shannetta R. Griffin, P.E.

These awards are on top of the nearly $2 billion for airport terminals announced over the past two years. The vast majority of the terminal projects are under construction.

Today’s funding is from the Airport Terminal Program, one of three aviation programs created by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and comes on the heels of more than $240 million in funding for Airport Infrastructure Grants. The law provides $1 billion annually for five years for Airport Terminal Program grants. In total, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law provided a historic $25 billion to modernize our country’s airport infrastructure. Learn more at faa.gov/bil.

President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law makes a historic investment in our nation’s infrastructure and competitiveness by rebuilding America’s roads, bridges and rails, upgrading and expanding public transit, and modernizing the nation’s ports and airports. To date, the Administration has announced over $415 billion in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding for over 46,000 infrastructure projects across the nation, and has mobilized over $640 billion in private sector manufacturing and clean energy investments in the United States.
